Pompoms of the World post - Celtic pompoms in the male Highland dress!

Hi all,

The roots of Halloween come very likely from folk customs and beliefs from the Celtic speaking countries before spread to the North America with the immigrants' wave during the 19th century.

So when I was preparing this post, I found interesting to speak about "Celtic pompom" and tried to find something matching with pompom and this ancestral culture. So, fruits of my research, I was happy to discover that the Highland male dress has pompoms!

When we speak about Celtic culture and its dress code, we think quickly about Kilt and Celtic pipe. Yes, but it is not just that.

The term highland dress describes the traditional dress of Scotland. It is often characterized by tartan (plaid in North America) patterns in some form.

The male highland dress includes kilt (or trews), sporran (a little belt bag), sgian dubh (a sort of knife) and ghillies (or ghillie brogues, traditional thick soled shoes with no tongues and long laces).

And for the head, it exists many folk hats with Pompoms! to complete the folk costume :

* the tam o'shanter, from the Tam o'Shanter poem, is an original blue wool beret with a pompom in its center named a Toorie

* The Balmoral bonnet is close to a cap. Black, navy blue or green, it has a red pompom in this center.

* The Glengarry is a black "calot" with a red pompom in its center and ribbons behind and a vichy black, red and white tissue banner.
